Sara Evans, Jay Barker set up by counselor who worked on their previous marriages
Sara Evans revealed this week she met her husband, former Alabama quarterback Jay Barker through a marriage counselor who was helping both through their previous marriages.
She shared the unlikely story on an episode of Tori Spelling’s podcast “MisSpelling.”
“Jay and I were introduced by a marriage counselor,” the 53-year-old entertainer said, per US. “He and his (then)-wife were separated. (My ex-husband) Craig (Schelske) and I were going through marriage counseling because I didn’t believe in divorce.”
Evans and Schelske, 60, were married from 1993 to 2007. One year after her divorce was finalized, the country singer married Barker, 51, who was previously married to Amy DiGiovanna from 1995 to 2007.
The singer said she and Schelske attended the same marriage counseling as Barker and DiGiovanna. Evans said the therapist, Joe, set up Evans and Barker.
“Joe calls me and says ‘I’ve never done this before because I’ve spent my life trying to keep marriages together, but I don’t think you should stay with Craig because there’s a lot of problems and I have someone I want you to meet,’” Evans told Spelling.
Evans said when she found out Barker was a former football player, she messaged him.
“I put the kids to bed one night,” she said. “I was doing the dishes. I went into my office at home, and I emailed Jay, went back to the kitchen, and I heard the ding on my computer and I’m like, ‘He’s been sitting here waiting for me to email him.”
In March, Evans and Barker reconciled, two years after a domestic incident that revealed problems in their relationship and resulted in his arrest in Nashville.
In August 2021, Evans filed for divorce from the former Alabama football quarterback. In January 2022, Barker was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after reportedly trying to hit Evans with a vehicle. Barker was released from the Davidson County Jail after posting a $10,000 bond.
