San Francisco 49ers’ first-round draft pick shot in robbery attempt

San Francisco 49ers first-round draft pick Ricky Pearsall has been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries after being shot on Saturday.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, Pearsall was shot during a robbery attempt near Union Square in San Francisco, where was scheduled for an autograph signing.

Police said Pearsall and his assailant struggled. Both were shot and transported to San Francisco General Hospital.

At 8:55 p.m. CDT Saturday, the 49ers reported on social media that Pearsall had “sustained a bullet wound to his chest and is in serious but stable condition.”

Forty-Niners teammate Deebo Samuel tweeted: “He’s good. Thank God.”

Following the shooting, San Francisco Mayor London Breed issued a statement on the incident.

“This afternoon, there was an attempted robbery in Union Square involving San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall, and he was shot,” Breed wrote in a social-media post. “SFPD was on scene immediately, and an arrest of the shooter was made.”

Pearsall joined San Francisco as the 31st selection in the NFL Draft on April 25 after he had 65 receptions for 965 yards and four touchdowns and ran three times for 62 yards and three touchdowns for Florida in 2023.

After winning the NFC championship in 2023, the 49ers are preparing to kick off their 2024 season against the New York Jets at 7:15 p.m. CDT Sept. 9 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Pearsall missed most of San Francisco’s training-camp work because of a shoulder injury.
