Samford women’s basketball coach steps down after six seasons

Samford women’s basketball coach Carley Kuhns has stepped down after six seasons as the program’s head coach, it was announced on Thursday.

The release said Kuhns will take a new opportunity with another program.

“I want to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Beck Taylor, Martin Newton and Michelle Durban for the privilege of leading such an exceptional program at this prestigious institution over the past six seasons,” Kuhns said in a release. “During these years, I’ve had the honor of working alongside some of the most real human beings, who are tremendous coaches and mentors in this profession.

“We truly became family, and I’m profoundly grateful to each of them for their investment in me and our players.”

Kuhns posted an 84-94 record across six seasons, with the Bulldogs claiming SoCon regular season and tournament titles in the 2019-20 season.

She also led the team to a regular-season conference title the following season and was named SoCon Coach of the Year for her first two seasons at Samford.

Her 2024-25 squad finished 12-19 and 7-7 overall before falling to Wofford in the first round of the SoCon Tournament.

“I would like to thank Carley for all she has done for the Samford women’s basketball program and for Samford University,” Samford athletics director Martin Newton said in a release. “She came in and had immediate success after being hired here in 2019 and has always represented Samford well.

“Her dedication to our program and to its student-athletes has been a tremendous asset and she will be missed.”
