Sam Walters becomes latest Alabama basketball player to enter portal

Alabama basketball’s roster continues to be reshaped ahead of the 2024-25 season. A fourth scholarship player will reportedly enter the transfer portal.

Sam Walters, a sharpshooting freshman, told On3 he will look for a new school after one year in Tuscaloosa. Walters joins Davin Cosby, Rylan Griffen, Kris Parker as now-open roster spots for head coach Nate Oats.

Walters, formerly a four-star prospect from Florida, averaged 12.3 minutes per game, eighth-most of UA players. He entered games for his 3-point shooting, converting 39.4% of his makes from behind the arc — third-best on the team of players with at least 99 attempts. Walters averaged 5.4 points and 2.4 rebounds per game.

He admittedly needed to learn how to play defense at the collegiate level. His 6-foot-10, 198-pound frame didn’t lend itself to a natural position. Oats utilized him as a guard throughout the year. Walters had a hot two-game stretch in February, scoring 25 points against Texas A&M and Florida.

Walters struggled to find consistent playing time as he hit a cold shooting stretch in the postseason. Walters contributed 17 points during Alabama’s first-ever run to the Final Four.

In addition to Houston Mallette (Pepperdine) and Chris Youngblood (South Florida) the Tide should have a set of capable wing options to replace Griffen and Walters’ productivity.

The Tide has three prospects coming in from high school, including five-star Derrion Reid, the third highest-rated recruit (per 247Sports ratings) in school history behind Collin Sexton and Brandon Miller. Oats and co. await the decisions of Mark Sears, Grant Nelson and other Tide players this offseason.
