Salaries revealed for new Alabama coordinators Tommy Rees and Kevin Steele

The compensation committee for the University of Alabama’s board of trustees approved new contracts Monday for 11 football staffers, including new Tide coordinators Tommy Rees and Kevin Steele.

Rees and Steele both received three-year contracts through February 28, 2026, athletics director Greg Byrne told the committee. Both will be paid $1.9 million in 2023, with Rees’ deal increasing his pay to $2 million in 2024 and $2.1 million in 2025.

The highest-paid assistant in college football last season whose deal was publicly-available in the USA Today’s database was former Georgia offensive coordinator Todd Monken at $2 million, followed by Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles at $1.9 million.

Rees was officially hired February 13 as offensive coordinator after holding the same role at Notre Dame. Steele’s hire as defensive coordinator was announced the same day, with the longtime SEC assistant returning to Tuscaloosa after serving as Miami’s defensive coordinator last season.

Because Notre Dame and Miami are both private schools, salaries for Rees and Steele at their previous stops were not publicly known. But FootballScoop.com reported Rees received a pay raise last year from the Irish that averaged about $2 million per season, while Steele made $2.5 million as Auburn’s defensive coordinator in 2020.

Former Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien, now with the New England Patriots, made $1.1 million in the second and final season of his contract in 2022. Former defensive coordinator Pete Golding, now with Ole Miss, made $1.6 million last season and left for the Rebels with another season remaining on his deal.

New Alabama inside linebackers coach Robert Bala also had his contract approved Monday after the former Liberty analyst under Hugh Freeze was officially hired March 3. Bala received a two-year contract through Feb. 28, 2025 at $325,000 per season.

Running backs coach Robert Gillespie, wide receivers coach/assistant head coach of offense Holmon Wiggins, tight ends coach Joe Cox, offensive line coach Eric Wolford, defensive line coach Freddie Roach and outside linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Coleman Hutzler also received pay raises.

Cox received a one-year extension through the 2024 season at $425,000 per season. That increased his pay from the $325,000 he was scheduled to make.

Gillespie’s deal was extended one year through the 2024 season at $625,000 season. He was scheduled to make $565,000.

Hutzler’s contract was extended one season through 2024 at $595,000, while upping his pay from the $495,000 he was set to earn.

Roach’s deal was extended one year through 2024 at $775,000 per season, an increase from $750,000 in his previous deal.

Wiggins’ deal was extended one year through the 2024 season at $875,000 per season after he earned a large raise last year to $850,000.

Wolford’s deal was extended one year through the 2024 season at $925,000 per season, up from $900,000.

Cornerbacks coach Travaris Robinson was the only Tide on-field assistant without a contract update presented to the compensation committee Monday. His current deal is set to expire after this season after paying him $800,000.

Football staffers David Ballou, the director of sports performance, and Bob Welton, the director of player personnel, received pay raises. Ballou’s deal was extended two years through 2024 at $725,000 per season, while Welton had a year added to his deal through 2024 at $255,000 per year.
