NFL Week 6 Saints vs. Texans odds preview

This is a cross-conference battle between two wily and well-coached teams, something reflected in the evenness of the odds despite the two contenders’ differing results in Week 5.

While the New Orleans’ defense dominated and ultimately blew out the New England Patriots last week, Houston went down by two points in a 21-19 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons.

CJ Stroud, a star in the making, went 20-of-35 for 249 yards and a touchdown as the Texans’ defense forced two turnovers. Stroud, the second overall pick, now holds the NFL rookie record for pass attempts (186) without throwing an interception.

Meanwhile, the Saints got huge long-term boosts as Derek Carr’s shoulder looked in better condition and Alvin Kamara settled back into his role after his season-starting absence. The running back had 22 carries for 80 yards and a touchdown.

However, it’s primarily the stern and dangerous Saints’ defense that could swing this game in their favour, and they’re slim 1.5-point favorites.

This is a massive game for both sides, perhaps particularly for Houston, who are just a game back of first in the AFC South, where everyone is either 3-2 or 2-3, despite currently sporting a losing record.

Best Saints vs. Texans game props and odds: Under 42.5 points (-110)

The Saints lit it up against the Patriots but Bill Belichick’s side are broken, so it’s hard to know how much to read into that scoreline from a New Orleans perspective. Meanwhile, the Texans can’t finish their dinner right now; touching down on just 35% of their red zone drives, the third-worst mark in the NFL.

Neither team has had any semblance of consistency, each splitting their five games so far, so this could be something of a reset week. Every single one of the past 11 Saints games has gone under the points total, and there’s no compelling reason to suggest that will change here.

All good things must end.

Stroud, as well as his record interception-less run, is currently averaging just below 300 yards per game, showing the type of ability and consistency that has led many to believe he should have been the No.1 overall pick for 2023.

But, as good as Stroud has been — and it is very good — this New Orleans defense could provide him with his toughest test yet given its status as one of the best secondaries in all of football. The Saints entered Week 6 having allowed the fourth-fewest yards passing in the NFL and they have picked off opposing QBs seven times already, just one off the league-high eight by both San Francisco and Buffalo, neither of whom Stroud has faced. Is this the game? It could well be.
