Sacramento Kings trade former Auburn guard
The flurry of trades associated with the NBA Draft on Wednesday and Thursday had a former Auburn guard on the move with Davion Mitchell part of a deal between the Sacramento Kings and Toronto Raptors, KTXL-TV in Sacramento and ESPN reported.
Mitchell started his college career by playing in 34 games for Auburn in the 2017-18 season, when the Tigers shared the SEC regular-season title and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament. Mitchell averaged 3.7 points and 1.9 assists per game in his only season with Auburn.
Mitchell transferred to Baylor and entered the NBA with the Sacramento Kings as the ninth choice in the 2021 draft after two seasons with the Bears.
Mitchell came on during his rookie season and made 11 of his 19 starts to close the campaign. He averaged 18.8 points and 9.3 assists in those 11 games. But while remaining a regular contributor for Sacramento, he has started only 13 games in the past two seasons. In 227 regular-season games, the 6-foot-2 guard has averaged 7.4 points, 1.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists while building a reputation as a strong perimeter defender.
Sean Cunningham, the reporter for Kings Radio, reported Sacramento sent Mitchell, forward Sasha Vezenkov, the 45th pick in this year’s draft (after selecting Houston guard Jamal Shead on Toronto’s behalf) and a 2025 second-round pick to Toronto for forward Jalen McDaniels.
In his fourth NBA season, McDaniels averaged 3.4 points and 1.6 rebounds in 50 games for the Raptors in 2023-24.
If that sounds as though the Kings gave up a lot for a player with stats like that, Sacramento also got out of NBA luxury-tax territory and opened a playing slot for its first-round draft pick.
The King chose guard Devin Carter at No. 13 on Wednesday night after he averaged 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.0 blocks for Providence last season.
