Saban not worried about kicking struggles: ‘They’re like assassins’

Will Reichard is in a slump if you can call it that.

Alabama’s legendary kicker has missed three of his last four attempts, though they’ve silently hooked wide left and out of mind while the Tide has handled an injured quarterback amid close victories. Nick Saban isn’t the type of head coach to check in after a batch of errors, though.

“Nobody can make every kick but I just don’t want him to press. I don’t want him to feel like there’s any anxiety or pressure for him to do something,” Saban said. “… He’s been a very consistent guy for us. We have a lot of confidence in him.”

Reichard’s still made seven of 10 tries this year, a shade below his 79.6% career mark. He matched a career-high 52-yarder to help beat Texas on the road and is on pace for a career-high in touchbacks. Reichard drew praise early in the season for his consistency.

Aside from Reichard’s misses of 35-, 47- and 53-yards and a rolled-back snap at Arkansas, the specialists have been solid. Punter Janes Burnip is averaging 43 yards an attempt with eight inside the 20. Moments matter for players like Reichard and Burnip, as Saban explained during his Wednesday press conference:

“When I talk to the guys it’s usually telling them they did a good job. If they don’t hit a good one, punt a good one, kick a good one, it’s, ‘Hey, forget about it. Focus on the next one.’ Those guys aren’t like players. They don’t play 70 plays in the game. They’re like assassins. They got one shot. They gotta make it count. That’s the mindset they have. To focus on being prepared to do it the next time is probably the most important thing.”

Reichard will travel with the No. 3 Tide to Neyland Stadium on Saturday for a 2:30 p.m. CDT kickoff against No. 6 Tennessee.
