Saban mum on WR sitting 1st half, defensive back injuries following MTSU win

A pair of injuries in Alabama’s secondary “might be a problem” for the Crimson Tide moving forward.

Head coach Nick Saban told SEC Network that a few guys were “banged up” following UA’s 56-7 stomping of Middle Tennessee State. The notable players that exited the game were defensive backs Jaylen Key and Malachi Moore.

“I don’t know the extent of their injuries, Jaylen Key and Malachi Moore both, but we’ll see how that goes. They’ll get evaluated tomorrow and probably know more soon,” Saban told reporters postgame.

Key and Moore combined for six total tackles. Key jumped a short route for the Tide’s first turnover of the season. Moore left in the third quarter and appeared to hobble his way into the home locker room.

But while Saban preempted the injury question, he demurred when asked about Ja’Corey Brooks. After being Alabama’s second-leading receiver in yards from a year ago, the junior wideout sat for the first half of Saturday night’s game.

“You know you guys have a job to do, and you know how much I love you and I want to help you do your job and all that. Give you depth charts, but I’m not gonna reveal to you what a guy did or didn’t do to put himself in the position where he sat out the first half. But he sat out the first half,” Saban said.

Brooks recorded his first snap in the third quarter, finishing with zero catches and two targets. He was also called for a holding penalty on a fourth-quarter punt.

In the place of Brooks, eight different players caught passes for the Tide. Isaiah Bond led with 76 yards on five receptions and a touchdown. Defensively, the defensive backs were replaced by Earl Little Jr. and Trey Amos, among others.

Alabama will need its depth in Week 2 when No. 11 Texas – who opened with 37 points against Rice in a big win – rolls into Bryant-Denny Stadium.
