Saban: Freshman RB misses Alabama scrimmage, out ‘a few days’ with injury

One of Alabama football’s promising newcomers is a little banged up. Justice Haynes, a five-star from Georgia, was held out of the Tide’s second and final preseason scrimmage on Saturday.

“Justice didn’t practice today,” Nick Saban told reporters after coming off the field at Bryant-Denny Stadium. “He’s been out for a few days with a quad contusion.”

Haynes had made an early impression on his new teammates and coaches earlier this spring, starring for three touchdowns during A-Day. Saban said you wouldn’t know Haynes was a freshman with his “great maturity” and said the ball carrier had a “bright future” on April 22.

Haynes’ emergence also solidified the running back room as being one of the deepest positions on the team. New offensive coordinator Tommy Rees said UA was “spoiled” in the room. Jase McClellan, Roydell Williams and Jamarion Miller returned, Haynes enrolled early and Richard Young arrived in the summer.

“I think running back is we’ve got four or five guys that can play there,” Saban said earlier this fall. “The key to the drill is keeping them healthy so that they can continue to develop and progress and complement each other.”

And in a relatively injury-free fall camp for the Tide — the program doesn’t provide injury reports — the running back room was slightly affected during fan day on Aug. 5 when Miller was in a non-contact jersey with a “thigh bruise.”

Saban mentioned Haynes’ quad when asked about UA’s running back’s ability to pass protect. Saban complimented the veterans and once again noted that Young’s short time with the team hasn’t led to the freshman having the most “confidence” yet.
