Saban argues for Alabama, SEC representation in College Football Playoff

Alabama football is in an interesting spot with regards to the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide is ranked eighth, with only the SEC championship game against No. 1 Georgia.

Even if UA is able to win Saturday’s matchup in Atlanta, it might not make the CFP field. Furthermore, Georgia could drop out of the top four with a loss, leaving the SEC without a team in the playoff at all.

Nick Saban was asked about the prospect during his appearance on the Pat McAfee Show Thursday.

“First of all, I haven’t paid a lot of attention to it because we don’t really control that,” Saban said. “We have no control over that. We have control over how we play, how we execute, how we prepare our team and that’s where our focus is.”

The SEC has had a team in every CFP field since the four-team playoff began after the 2014 season. Saban argued Thursday that the streak should continue, even if it’s his Crimson Tide team winning the championship game.

“I think there should be some representation from the SEC regardless of who wins the game, absolutely,” Saban said. “I think this is one of the best leagues in the country and if you’re a one-loss team and you play through this league, I think you’re one of the best four teams in the country. So, some kind of way, there should be representation, some kind of way, because of the league itself and the competition in the league.

“But I don’t pay a lot of attention because we can’t control it, and I don’t really want our players to pay attention to it either. I want them to focus on what they have to do to play well and have a chance to be successful in this game and have a chance to win the SEC championship. That’s the opportunity they created for themselves.”

Alabama and Georgia are scheduled to kick off at 3 p.m. CT Saturday. The game will be aired on CBS.
