Running back Kenyan Drake returns to the NFL

Kenyan Drake ran for 482 yards and four touchdowns on 109 carries and caught 17 passes for 89 yards and one touchdown in 12 games, with five starts, for the Baltimore Ravens last season.

On Wednesday, the Ravens announced the former Alabama running back had returned to the team as a member of the practice squad.

Drake comes aboard after running back J.K. Dobbins sustained a season-ending injury in Baltimore’s first game of 2023. With the opening-game starter out, the Ravens used Justice Hill for 11 carries and Gus Edwards for 10 in Sunday’s 27-24 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals.

NFL teams are allowed to elevate two players from their practice squad to activate status for each game.

Drake signed with the Indianapolis Colts as a free agent after his only season with Baltimore but was released on Aug. 27 as the Colts cut their preseason roster to the regular-season limit of 53 players.

Drake has run for 3,866 yards and 33 touchdowns on 867 carries in 101 NFL regular-season games. He also has 216 receptions for 1,624 yards and eight touchdowns.

A third-round draft choice in 2016 after playing for Alabama’s CFP national championship team in 2015, Drake started his NFL career in Miami. The Dolphins traded him to the Arizona Cardinals in the middle of his fourth campaign.

As the Cardinals’ No. 1 running back, Drake exceeded his rushing stats with Miami in less than half the games. In 2020, Drake had 955 yards and 10 touchdowns on 239 rushing attempts in 15 games for Arizona.

After that season, Drake signed as a free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders to form a tandem with Josh Jacobs, another former Alabama running back.

Drake ran for 254 yards and two touchdowns on 63 carries and caught 30 passes for 291 yards and one TD in 2021 before he suffered a broken ankle in a 17-15 loss to the Washington Football Team on Dec. 5. He missed Las Vegas’ final five regular-season games and a playoff contest.

Released by the Raiders with a season left on his contract, Drake signed with Ravens 11 days before their first game in the 2022 regular season.

The Ravens play the Colts at noon CDT Sunday at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore.
