Ruben Studdard celebrates 20th anniversary of his first album on ‘Front Porch’

Ruben Studdard’s first solo album, “Soulful,” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard charts 20 years ago. To celebrate that feat, the R&B singer performed hits from the album on a YouTube series called “Front Porch.”

Studdard, 45, a Birmingham resident, performed hits like “Flying Without Wings,” and “Sorry 2004.” After singing the first song of the performance, “Superstar,” Studdard thanked his fans.

“Twenty years ago, God really blessed me with the opportunity to live my dreams out. It’s because of y’all out there in internet land or wherever y’all at, y’all gave me the chance to do what I’ve always wanted to do since I was 5 years old,” Studdard said. “And that’s sing for a living.”

The 18-minute performance was posted to YouTube on Tuesday and has more than 16,000 views.

Studdard also performed a new song, “Masterpiece,” from his latest album, 2023′s “The Way I Remember It.”

“Noochie’s Live From the Front Porch Presents” is a YouTube series that has become a vital showcase in the casual setting of a home in Washington, D.C. The house belongs to rapper Noochie, who started the concept by recording himself freestyling over some of hip-hop’s most popular beats, then sharing the content on YouTube and Instagram. Over time, he and his team elevated the production values and added an accompanying band, and Noochie started reached out to some more well-known acts to take the stage on the front porch of his home.

The D.C. influence can be heard in the mix of Studdard’s performance of “Masterpiece,” which includes the iconic conga drum patterns of Go-Go music.

Other artists like Syleena Johnson, Raheem DaVaughn, and Kenny Lattimore have hit the “Front Porch.”

On Wednesday, Studdard thanked his fans for watching, commenting, and sharing the video across social media, via his Instagram page. “Your support means the world to me,” Studdard said.

The Alabama singer initially made his fame on “American Idol” as the winner of Season 2. Gladys Knight was impressed by Studdard when she appeared as a guest judge on the show, and gave him the nickname “Velvet Teddy Bear.” His silky voice also earned comparisons to Luther Vandross. Studdard made jersey shirts with the “205″ label popular across the city. In 2003, Governor Bob Riley named March 11 as Ruben Studdard Day.

Studdard and his wife Kristen Studdard welcomed their second child, daughter Henri, on March 21, and shared the news with People magazine. The couple also has a 3-year-old son named Olivier.
