Roy Wood Jr. was anything but subtle Monday night at the 2024 Emmys.

During Trevor Noah’s acceptance speech for Comedy Central, the former “Daily Show” correspondent silently mouthed a message for all to see: “Please hire a host.”

The show has had rotating hosts since Noah stepped down in December 2022.

Wood, who quit the show in December 2023 after eight years, has been among them as the search for a permanent host continues.

“The show’s been looking for a new permanent host since Trevor Noah left the job late last year,” reported NPR’s Eric Deggans, who spoke with Wood in October. “The writers’ strike shut down the show in May and that likely delayed the search. … Wood has decided he doesn’t want to work on the show as a correspondent if someone else will be the permanent host. He’d rather use the time to figure out what he’s going to do next.”

“Oh wow, I told you we would beat John Oliver if he wasn’t in our category,” Noah joked Monday in accepting the award for outstanding talk series. “We got rid of John Oliver.”

Noah’s acceptance speech came after “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” won in back-to-back categories for outstanding scripted variety series — and writing for a variety series.

After his onstage message, Wood tweeted: “chill fam I was trying to do that in the low.”

The Birmingham-raised standup comic is well-respected in the world of comedy, having appeared on Marc Maron’s hit “WTF” podcast, during which the host sang his praises as “one of the greats.”

He appeared in the critically acclaimed comedy “Confess, Fletch,” also starring “Mad Men” actor Jon Hamm and was in the first season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” as well as headlining several stand-up comedy hours.
