Roy Wood Jr. ‘absolutely’ wants to be considered for ‘Daily Show’ gig

There’s been plenty of chatter about Roy Wood Jr. as a likely candidate for the new host of “The Daily Show.”

The comedian, who grew up in Birmingham, has been a standout correspondent on the Comedy Central series since 2015, and Wood’s name immediately came to mind — in his hometown and elsewhere — when Trevor Noah announced that he was leaving.

An official replacement for Noah hasn’t been announced, but here’s a relevant question in the meantime: Does Wood actually want the gig? The comedian shared his thoughts in a recent interview with Deadline:

“My future at ‘The Daily Show’ is not promised, in terms of hosting,” Wood said. “Do I want to be in consideration for hosting? Absolutely. Am I in the hopper as one of the many guest hosts that will be coming up in the next couple of months? Absolutely. But in the interim, not knowing how that’s going to go. I got to put a couple of the pots on the stove, man, and I got to make sure that one of them bits pays off.”

Wood was talking with reporter Peter White about his plans for the future, which include a hiatus for one podcast, “Roy’s Job Fair,” and the continuation of another, “Beyond the Scenes from The Daily Show.” Both have been on the agenda for Comedy Central and iHeart Media.

In October, Wood told The Hollywood Reporter that if he were offered the top spot at “The Daily Show,” he’d have to think about how to put his own stamp on the show.

“You can’t say no to an opportunity like that,” Wood said. “You can’t turn your nose up at it, at least. I think you have to sit and assess what you want to do creatively, and that’s something I haven’t thought about yet.”

Would Wood continue on the show as a correspondent if a different host is chosen? The jury’s still out on that, he said.

“It would depend on the host,” Wood told The Hollywood Reporter. “It would depend on the creative direction of the show. What are you trying to do? How do I fit into that? And does that creative direction fit my comedic skill sets and give me an opportunity to show who I am?”

Wood added that team at “The Daily Show” has encouraged him to work on TV segments that accord with his real-life interests. As a correspondent, Wood has tackled topics that range from racism and white supremacy to gender issues and financial legislation. He’s also covered pop culture, food, family dynamics, science, sports … you name it.

“I’ve never been told no when it was a weird thing that you might not think has humor,” Wood said. “So I would want to make sure that whatever I’m doing on television — and this is ‘Daily Show’ and beyond — I want to make sure that it’s something that equates to the things I find funny, and the things that I’m curious about.”

Right now, the list of guest hosts for “The Daily Show” includes Leslie Jones, Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, Chelsea Handler and Sarah Silverman. Dates for Al Franken, John Leguizamo, Hasan Minhaj, Kal Penn and Marlon Wayans, along with correspondents and contributors are on the way, Deadline said.
