1 Team has appeared in the Rose Bowl more than Michigan, which is playing in the game for the 21st time on Monday. Southern Cal has 34 Rose Bowl appearances. Playing in Pasadena for the first time in 17 years, Michigan has lost its past three Rose Bowl appearances to drop to 8-12 in the game. Since defeating Washington State 21-16 in 1998, the Wolverines have lost to Southern Cal 28-14 in 2004, Texas 38-37 in 2005 and Southern Cal 32-18 in 2007 in New Year’s Days games at the Rose Bowl.

3 Victories for Alabama and two for Michigan in the Crimson Tide-Wolverines series. Alabama won 17-14 in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 1, 1997, 41-14 on Sept. 1, 2012, and 35-16 in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, 2020. Michigan won 28-24 in the Hall of Fame Bowl on Jan. 2, 1988, and 35-34 in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 2000.

5 Consecutive Alabama quarterbacks have reached the CFP national-championship game in their first seasons as the full-time starter, with Jalen Milroe trying to extend the streak with a win on Monday. Jake Coker in 2015, Jalen Hurts in 2016, Tua Tagovailoa in 2018, Mac Jones in 2020 and Bryce Young in 2021 went from their first season-opening start to playing for the national championship. The most recent Alabama quarterback who didn’t accomplish that was Blake Sims in 2014, when the Crimson Tide lost to Ohio State 42-35 in the Sugar Bowl, which was a CFP semifinal game.

5 Victories and three losses for SEC teams in the Rose Bowl. Between Alabama’s 34-14 victory over Southern Cal on Jan. 1, 1946, and Georgia’s 54-48 victory over Oklahoma on Jan. 1, 2018, no SEC team played in the Rose Bowl. The Big Ten played annually in the Rose Bowl in most of those seasons, and the conference has a 34-39 record in the game.

7 Previous appearances in the Rose Bowl for Alabama. The Crimson Tide made its first five bowl appearances in the Rose, defeating Washington 20-19 in 1926, Washington State 24-0 in 1931 and Stanford 29-13 in 1935, losing to California 13-0 in 1938 and tying Stanford 7-7 in 1927 in New Year’s Day games. Alabama defeated Southern Cal 34-14 on Jan. 1, 1946, and Notre Dame 31-14 on Jan. 1, 2021, in its other Rose Bowl appearances.

8 Unbeaten, untied teams have lost their final game of the season to Alabama during the SEC era. Alabama has defeated Nebraska 39-28 in the Orange Bowl on Jan. 1, 1966, Penn State 14-7 in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 2, 1978, Miami (Fla.) in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1, 1992, Texas 37-21 in the BCS national-championship game on Jan. 7, 2010, LSU 21-0 in the BCS national-championship game on Jan. 9, 2012, Notre Dame 42-14 in the BCS national-championship game on Jan. 7, 2013, Clemson 45-40 in the CFP national-championship game on Jan. 11, 2016, and Ohio State 52-24 in the CFP national-championship game on Jan. 11, 2021, to pin the only loss of the season on those teams.

8 Years since Michigan won in a bowl. Since the Wolverines defeated Florida 41-7 in the Citrus Bowl on Jan. 1, 2016, they’ve lost six bowl outings to leave their bowl record at 21-29.

9 Victories and four losses for Alabama in the College Football Playoff. The Crimson Tide has the most games, most victories and most CFP selections (eight) in the format’s 10-year history. Alabama won the CFP championship in 2015, 2017 and 2020. Michigan has an 0-2 record in the CFP.

11 Victories for Alabama against the No. 1 team in the AP Poll, the most victories against the top-ranked team. Alabama has an 11-5 record, including an 8-2 mark under coach Nick Saban, when playing the No. 1 team.

12 Rushing TDs for Alabama’s Jalen Milroe in 2023, one short of the Crimson Tide’s single-season record for quarterbacks. Jalen Hurts ran for 13 TDs in 2016. Milroe has rushed for 468 yards on 140 carries this season.

13 Victories and five losses for Alabama against Big Ten opponents, including a 10-4 bowl record. The Crimson Tide has won its past four games against Big Ten teams, most recently defeating Ohio State 52-24 in the CFP championship game for the 2020 season.

14 Victories and 11 losses for Michigan against SEC opponents, including an 8-9 bowl record. The Wolverines have lost their past three games against SEC opponents, most recently falling to Georgia 34-11 in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 31, 2021.

16 Of Alabama QB Jalen Milroe’s 23 TD passes this season have been for longer than 25 yards and eight have been 40 or longer. The Michigan defense has allowed seven TD passes this season.

19 Bowl victories for Alabama coach Nick Saban, the third-most of any coach. Joe Paterno had a 24-12-1 bowl record at Penn State, and Bobby Bowden had a 22-10-1 bowl record at West Virginia and Florida State. Saban’s bowl record has been 0-3 at Michigan State, 3-2 at LSU and 16-6 at Alabama. With the Crimson Tide, three of Saban’s losses have come in the Sugar Bowl and three in the CFP championship game.

22.2 Yards per reception for Alabama WR Jermaine Burton this season, the best average in the nation for any player with more than 32 catches. Burton has 35 receptions for 777 yards and eight TDs.

24 Rushing TDs have been scored by Michigan RB Blake Corum this season, three more than any other player in the nation. Corum has run for 1,028 yards on 218 carries in 2023. Corum is tied for the Michigan career record of 55 rushing TDs, established by Anthony Thomas from 1997 through 2000.

37 Years since Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh was the Wolverines’ starting quarterback in the Rose Bowl. No. 4 Michigan lost to No. 7 Arizona State 22-15 on Jan. 1, 1987. Harbaugh completed 13-of-23 passes for 172 yards with no TDs and three interceptions and scored on a 2-yard run.

77 Bowl appearances for Alabama when the Crimson Tide takes the field for the Rose Bowl on Monday. No other program has more than 62 bowl appearances. With a 46-27-3 record, Alabama has the most bowl victories, too – eight more than No. 2 Georgia.

135 Passing yards are needed by QB J.J. McCarthy to become the sixth player in Michigan history with at least 6,000 in his career. With a 25-1 record as a starter, McCarthy is the Wolverines’ career record-holder for completion rate at 68.1 percent, passing-efficiency rating at 161.3 and lowest interception rate at 1.65 percent. This season, McCarthy has completed 213-of-287 passes for 2,630 yards with 19 TDs and four interceptions. His completion rate of 74.2 percent is ahead of the Michigan single-season record.

309 Games have been played by Alabama since it was most recently shut out. Alabama’s scoring streak is the third-longest in SEC history and the 12th-longest in major-college football history. Alabama’s most recent shutout loss came 9-0 to Auburn on Nov. 18, 2000.

539 Points have been scored by Alabama K Will Reichard. He surpassed Navy QB Keenan Reynolds, who scored 530 points from 2012 through 2015, as the leading scorer in major-college football history in the Crimson Tide’s previous game.

1,967 Victories for Michigan and Alabama, who rank first and second, respectively, among major-college programs for all-time wins. According to the NCAA record book, Michigan has a 1,002-353-36 record and Alabama has a 965-336-43 record. The Crimson Tide has a winning percentage of .7340, and the Wolverines have a winning percentage of .7333.
