Rolling Stones, Guns Nâ Roses, Foo Fighters openers set Huntsville show
The camera kisses Luke Spiller, and he kisses it right back. Onstage with English band The Struts, Spiller is a fantastically flamboyant frontman who wears catsuits, capes and makeup and oozes charisma.
Flash is fun but as a singer Spiller brings it, too. His pipes are awesome enough that Queen’s Brian May and Roger Taylor had him guest on a powerful version of “We Will Rock You” at 2022′s huge tribute concerts for late Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.
Spiller’s talent is a big reason The Struts have served as opening act for many of rock’s greatest bands, including The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters and The Who.
Even in front of fans waiting to hear “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Welcome to the Jungle,” “My Hero” and “My Generation,” The Struts have impressed. They’re widely considered one of the best live bands of their generation.
The Struts, formed in 2012, have scored sexy hits including “Could’ve Been Me, “Kiss This” and “Fallin’ With Me.” Also featuring guitarist Adam Slack, bassist Jed Elliott and drummer Gethin Davies, they’ve collaborated with the likes of Ke$ha, Robbie Williams and Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott and Phil Collen.
This year, the band is embarking on a headlining tour. The trek includes a May 8 Mars Music Hall stop at Huntsville’s Von Braun Center. Tickets are $25 plus applicable fees via ticketmaster.com and the VBC Box Office, address 700 Monroe St.
That week is shaping up to be a colossal one for rock fans in Huntsville. Metal gods Judas Priest will perform at the VBC’s Propst Arena May 7, and young lords Greta Van Fleet are set for Orion Amphitheater May 8.
The Struts’ latest album is 2023′s “Pretty Vicious,” featuring the angular title track, a top 25 alternative rock hit.
The support act for this tour is Lø Spirit, aka Josh Landry, a modern pop-rock singer with more than a million followers on TikTok. Lø Spirit tracks such as “Hollow” and “Mind of Mine” have racked up millions of Spotify streams.
In a 2018 Radio X interview (transcribed by NME) the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl called The Struts, “the best opening band we’ve ever had.”
Of Spiller, Grohl said, “He’ll walk out in front of an audience in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where nobody has ever heard of them and by the end of the show he’ll have the entire audience in the palm of his hand. I love seeing that. To see an audience turn like that is not easy.”
