Robbery suspects lead police, Star 1 helicopter on chase from Homewood to Birmingham; 3 in custody
A chase that began in Homewood Thursday night ended on Interstate 59/20 in Birmingham with three people in custody.
Jefferson County’s Star 1 helicopter assisted in that pursuit, and then again a short time later with a different incident in Homewood.
Homewood police responded shortly before 8:30 p.m. to a report of a robbery at the Motel 6 on Vulcan Road, said Sgt. John Carr.
Officers located and then tried to stop the suspects’ vehicle, but the driver refused to stop. A chase began, and ended on I-59/20 at the Arkadelphia exit ramp.
Three people were taken into custody. Their identities have not yet been released.
While the chase was taking place, Homewood police responded to a single-vehicle crash on Interstate 65 at Lakeshore Parkway. The driver, Carr said, fled from the vehicle.
Star 1 transitioned from the robbery pursuit to try to help locate the driver who ran from the wreck. As of 10 p.m., the driver had not been located.
Carr said there is no immediate threat to the public.
