Robbery suspect fires shot during foot chase with Birmingham police
A robbery suspect is in custody after a shot was fired during a foot chase with Birmingham police Saturday.
It initially appeared a bystander had been shot, but police determined no one was injured.
South Precinct officers at 12:45 p.m. were dispatched to a report of a robbery in progress in the 4600 Block of 13th Avenue North, said Officer Truman Fitzgerald.
Officers quickly arrived on the scene when they learned an adult male had been robbed of several belongings and the suspect was fleeing on foot.
Officers got into a foot chase with the suspect, Fitzgerald said. During the foot chase, officers heard the suspect fire a shot and then saw a bystander fall to the ground.
Officers initially believed the bystander was shot; however, officers later determined no one had been shot.
The suspect was taken into custody. He is undergoing questioning at police headquarters.
Fitzgerald said officers do not believe the suspect was firing at them.
