Robbery suspect charged with arson, murder of Montgomery grandmother found inside burning home

A 32-year-old man is under arrest in the September shooting death of a Montgomery woman, as well as two business robberies this week.

Darren Lamonde Price, a convicted felon from Montgomery, is charged with murder and first-degree arson in the slaying of 39-year-old Jacqueline Best, a mother and grandmother.

Montgomery police and fire medics responded at 5:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 24, to Jacqueline Best’s house in the 3500 block of Fairground Road on a report of a fire.

Best was found dead inside. An autopsy showed she had been shot.

Charging documents against Price said Best was fatally shot sometime between 1:47 p.m. Sept. 18 and 6:05 a.m. Sept. 24. Records state Price then set the house on fire.

“My mom was the kind of women who could walk through the room and fill it with laughter,’’ daughter Jasmine Freeman told AL.com shortly after Best’s death. “My mom was my hero through everything.”

A motive in the slaying has not been disclosed.

Price is also charged with first-degree robbery in a Sunday holdup at Days Inn on Troy Highway and a Wednesday robbery at the Chevron gas station.

A criminal complaint states Price stole $1,500 from the Chevron and $178 from the Days Inn.

He is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Price is being held without bond on the Montgomery County Detention Center.
