‘RIP Thomas Matthew Crooks’ graffiti found at Alabama skate park

A skateboard park near Mobile Police Headquarters was vandalized sometime on Tuesday with spray-painted references to a host of politically charged issues.

The graffiti also includes a sympathetic message toward the shooter in Saturday’s attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump during a rally in Butler, Pa.

“RIP Thomas Matthew Crooks” reads a message painted on the side of the skateboard ramp, referencing the 20-year-old gunman who opened fired from a rooftop and was shot to death.

One of the bullets hit Trump’s right year, prompting Secret Service agents to rush the Republican presidential nominee off stage.

One person was killed and two others were seriously injured by Crooks before he was shot dead by the Secret Service. A motive behind the shooting is still unknown, and the FBI are investigating it as a potential act of domestic terrorism.

Also spraypainted was “#BLM” — the initials for the “Black Lives Matter” movement. A hammer and sickle was also spraypainted onto the ramp, which long has symbolized communist Russia. Also added was “1848 A.D. – Forever.”

It’s unclear what that message means.

The year 1848 is when a wave of revolutions occurred in Europe, breaking out in 50 countries like Italy, Brazil, and Hungary.

The revolutionaries sought more liberal governments and freedom from monarchies with major contributing factors including widespread dissatisfaction with political leadership, demands for more participation in government and democracy, freedom of the press, and demands by the working class for economic rights, among other things.

The year 1848 is also when Communist Manifesto was released by Karl Marx.

Jason Johnson, spokesman with the City of Mobile, said that the Mobile Police Department and the Parks and Recreation Department are aware of the vandalism, and “our facilities team is already working to remove the graffiti.”

As of 2 p.m., the graffiti appeared to have been removed.

Johnson said that Mobile police are investigating the incident as an “act of vandalism,” and that officers will make close patrols around the park today, tonight and on Wednesday.
