Rickwood Field plans yard sale on Saturday

The Friends of Rickwood Field will have a yard sale at the stadium on Saturday, Dec. 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. featuring sports memorabilia and equipment donated by longtime supporters of America’s oldest baseball park.

“People donate things to us,” said Gerald Watkins, chairman of the Friends of Rickwood. “We never said no.”

The sale also includes some items that are part of Rickwood history.

If you want a giant “Yankees” sign that was in the Jackie Robinson movie “42″ that starred Chadwick Boseman and was filmed at Rickwood, they’ve got one.

“When they did the movie 42, they used our scoreboard to replicate Forbes Field, and they made plastic team name strips and numbers that were scrapped when the movie was over,” Watkins said. “The Yankees sign is 8 feet long and two feet wide.”

There is an entire storage room at Rickwood Field that is stuffed with sports-related memorabilia.

It includes an estate collection with books, magazines and dozens of baseball gloves and tennis racquets which will be offered for sale.

“One man donated his entire collection of 10,000 copies of Sports Illustrated,” Watkins said.

The magazines ranged from the 1950s through the early 2000′s.

“We have things from Rickwood Classic giveways, posters, framed pictures, artwork including football and golf prints, collectible baseball and football cards, items from our gift shop museum, gloves and bats, furniture, office chairs, bookcases,” Watkins said. “There are some Bear Bryant artifacts.”

In addition to the estate-style sale, the Rickwood gift shop will be open.

“It’s a potpourri of things,” Watkins said. “Some of the stuff is cool stuff. There are going to be some really good bargains.”

You may find an intriguing Christmas gift, and you’ll be helping out Friends of Rickwood with fundraising and by clearing space.

“We are clearing out a storage room, to enlarge it and make the gift shop bigger,” Watkins said. “We need the space and we don’t need all the stuff.”

Construction is currently underway at Rickwood to prepare the stadium at 1137 Second Ave. West in Birmingham for a Major League Baseball game next summer. Major League Baseball has announced it will play a game at Rickwood Field as a tribute to the Negro Leagues on June 20, 2024. It will feature the St. Louis Cardinals playing the San Francisco Giants.
