Richard Simmons’ brother reveals health guru’s cause of death

Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny Simmons has told PEOPLE the fitness guru’s death was accidental.

“This morning, Richard Simmons’ brother Lenny, received a call from the LA Coroner’s office,” a statement to PEOPLE from the Simmons family spokesperson, Tom Estey, read. “The Coroner informed Lenny that Richard’s death was accidental due to complications from recent falls and heart disease as a contributing factor. The toxicology report was negative other than medication Richard had been prescribed. The family wishes to thank everyone for their outpouring of love and support during this time of great loss.”

The news comes a month after it was announced the cause of death was ‘deferred’ and additional testing was needed.

Richard Simmons was found on July 13 at his home in Los Angeles by his housekeeper, one day after celebrating his 76th birthday.

Los Angeles police and fire departments said they responded to a house where Simmons was declared dead from natural causes.

Simmons had revealed a skin diagnosis in March 2024. In March, he posted to social media that he was dying, only to apologize a day later for the “confusion.”

“I have some news to tell you,” he posted in March. “Please don’t be sad. I am …. dying. The truth is we all are dying. Every day we live we are getting closer to our death.

“Why am I telling you this? Because I want you to enjoy your life to the fullest every single day. Get up in the morning and look at the sky… count your blessings and enjoy.”

He later clarified the post.

“Sorry many of you have gotten upset about my message today. Even the press has gotten in touch with me,” the fitness celebrity posted. “I am not dying.”
