Rhett Lashlee: ‘It’d be criminal’ if SMU is not in College Football Playoff
SMU coach Rhett Lashlee is in agreement with Clemson’s Dabo Swinney on one thing — the Mustangs should be in the College Football Playoff.
SMU is 11-2 after losing 34-31 to Clemson in Saturday night’s ACC championship game, and is likely to be in consideration for the final at-large spot in the 12-team playoff field with Alabama (which is 9-3 and did not play Saturday), among others. Lashlee’s Mustangs rallied from 17 down headed into the fourth quarter and tied the game before the Tigers won it on a 56-yard field goal as time expired.
Asked in his post-game press conference what his “message” would be to the College Football Playoff selection committee, Lashlee didn’t hold back.
“It’d be criminal if we’re not in,” Lashlee said. “It would be wrong. It’d be wrong on so many levels. Not just to our team, it’d be wrong to what college football stands for, to what it is.
“I mean, we just played a playoff game, basically, out there, and played pretty dang good. It was a pretty good game. I think the last three quarters, everybody saw what they’ve seen all year.”

SMU came into Saturday night ranked No. 8 overall, and — with top-ranked Oregon — was one of just two FBS teams that finished unbeaten in its conference during the regular season. The Mustangs’ only loss during the regular season came 18-15 to BYU on Sept. 6.
The case against the Mustangs is that they have no wins over teams currently ranked in the CFP Top 25. Louisville and Pittsburgh were ranked when SMU beat them, but have since dropped out.
We’ll find out if Alabama or SMU makes the College Football Playoff during the CFP Selection Show at 11 a.m. Central Sunday on ESPN.
