Rewinding what Hugh Freeze’s said after Auburn beat UMass 59-14

Follow along below for live updates of Hugh Freeze’s press conference after Auburn beat UMas 59-14 Saturday in the season opener. It was Freeze’s first win as Auburn head coach.

– Freeze starts his presser saying he received lots of texts from friends and family this morning before his first game as Auburn’s head coach. He said he’s thankful for the support of Auburn fans.

– Freeze said he’s happy with the amount of young players he was able to get in the game. “Man, they don’t get to do that often,” Freeze said of getting young players reps.

– Freeze will be having sandwiches at his house with his family after the game, if you wanted to know the post game meal. Jokingly, he said he isn’t going to take his family to Waffle House, but he might down the road.

– Freeze said he thought Auburn was balanced in the offense because it established the run early on in the game, which allowed for more passes.

– “I think Jeremiah Cobb is a really, really special talent,” Freeze said of Jeremiah Cobb and scoring his first touchdown.

– Freeze said Auburn made adjustments in his run defense but he still thought Auburn gave up way too many big running plays after Auburn’s first drive getting gashed. He’s hoping that will improve by next week.

– Gunner Britton played at three spots on the offensive line. Freeze said Britton gives Auburn the freedom to be flexible on the offensive line.

– Freeze said Payton Thorne made three decisions “that were not good.” Said they didn’t ask Freeze to do a lot in the passing game, and that was part of adjusting to the offense but also not wanting to show the whole playbook.

– Freeze thought Auburn’s secondary didn’t handle slant routes as well, but was happy with the secondary as a whole. Injuries forced Freeze to play many young players but no big plays given up.

– Freeze says he’s old school and that there are too many celebrations on the field, but just made his players promise to do those dances on the field. Freeze said he’d dance with them as long as they do it on the sideline.

– Freeze comments on coaches wearing On To Victory shirts, said that’s meant to show support for his players.
