Rewinding what Auburn’s Freeze said about win at Arkansas, prepping for New Mexico State

Coming off arguably their most complete game to date — a 48-10 win at Arkansas — Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers are just two weeks out from their regular-season finale against Alabama in the Iron Bowl.

But before they clash with their in-state rival, the Tigers have a date with the 8-3 New Mexico State Aggies on the calendar this Saturday in a game that will kick off from Jordan-Hare Stadium at 3 p.m.

Here’s everything Freeze said during his Monday morning press conference as he recaps Saturday’s dominating win over Arkansas and looks ahead to the rest of Auburn’s season, which is set to feature a bowl game after the Tigers beat the Razorbacks.

— “To go on the road and win in dominating fashion… the most glaring thing we were pleased with is we dominated the trenches on both sides,” Freeze says to open his press conference.

— “Good to be bowl eligible, for sure,” Freeze said, adding that he’s excited to represent Auburn in the postseason wherever that may be.

— Hugh Freeze says he’s going to look to the leadership of the team to be sure the Tigers don’t fall into complacency after last week’s win over Arkansas and this week’s approaching game against New Mexico State.

— “That doesn’t happen much in this conference,” Freeze said, adding he doesn’t remember a time he took a SEC team on the road and it going “quite like it did” against Arkansas Saturday, referring to dominating the Razorbacks.

— “You can’t help when you win some games and you’re getting some quality recruits, that’s cause to say you’ve got some positive momentum,” Freeze says. “But it’s a job and chore to keep all that.”

— “I firmly believe in life that you’re either winning or learning,” Freeze said. “When we’re in a four-game losing streak, you’re obviously not winning, so it should be winning time… The only way you truly ever lose is when you choose that.”

— “It’s really good just to see our kids play with confidence,” Freeze said of Auburn’s offense. “They seem to be a confident group right now.”

— Freeze says Auburn really started milking the clock midway through the third quarter against Arkansas and feels the Tigers could’ve put up some more numbers against the Razorbacks.

— “I think we’re okay,” Freeze said of Auburn’s injury report. He adds no one has been ruled out.

— “Quarterbacks, they better have that,” Freeze said of Payton Thorne having a next-play mentality. “And he has that.” Freeze adds that Thorne responds well to Freeze’s coaching, which can be intense at times. “The few mistakes he’s made, he knows better… but man, he is a no-excuse guy.”

— “Extremely, extremely difficult to manage that,” Freeze said when asked about what it was like to be in the discussion for the Auburn job while still coaching at Liberty last fall. “The truth is you really don’t know what’s going to happen in these job searches.”

— “I truthfully wasn’t out hunting the job,” Freeze said about taking the Auburn job. Freeze adds he’s thinking about the families that are about to be displaced by coaching changes. “It is extremely, extremely difficult to manage.”

— “I love our tight end room,” Freeze said when asked about Rivaldo Fairweather. Freeze adds that Auburn spent a lot of time in 12 personnel against Arkansas.

— “We won’t talk about the other team that you mentioned,” Freeze said when asked about preparing for Alabama. “The message is how will we choose to handle this week. And that starts with today.”

— “I think DJ (James) has improved and improved and improved,” Freeze said. Adds that Nehemiah Pritchett has matured too. “That’s rewarding to see.”

— “Marcus Harris is the most vocal leader and Keionte Scott,” Freeze said of the defense. “The others are playing with confidence.”

— Freeze said Jalen McLeod is just now truly getting over a high-ankle sprain he suffered early in the season and it’s starting to show on the field. He mentions McLeod being named SEC’s defensive player of the week today.

— “We still have a ways to go. There are some yards left out there,” Freeze said when asked about Auburn’s perimeter blocking. “I thought that was our best, to date, but we still have to work on it.”

— Freeze ends the press conference mentioning that his daughter is currently in labor with his second grandchild and asks for prayers.
