Rewinding Wednesday’s action from the Conference USA basketball tournaments in Huntsville
All of the No. 1 and No. 2-seeded teams advanced on Wednesday in the Conference USA men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in Huntsville.
Liberty and Middle Tennessee State picked up wins in the women’s tournament, while Liberty and Jacksonville State claimed victories in the men’s bracket.
The quarterfinals will continue on Thursday when New Mexico State’s women face Louisiana Tech.

—No. 3 Middle Tennessee State men 3 vs. No. 6 Louisiana Tech, 8 p.m.

WOMEN
No. 1 Liberty 78, No. 8 Sam Houston 51
The No. 1 seed left no doubt in its conference tournament opener.
Liberty dominated Sam Houston with a lopsided victory in the Conference USA quarterfinals behind the second-half shooting of Asia Boone.
Boone, an all-conference selection, led the Flames with 16 points after going 6-for-9 from the field and knocking down a pair of 3-point baskets; she only attempted one shot in the first half.
All-conference center Bella Smuda and guard Avery Mills also scored in double figures with 10 points each, with Smuda adding 7 rebounds and Mills dishing out 3 assists off the bench.
Four other Liberty players scored 8 points each, with Brooke Moore leading the Flames with 8 rebounds.
Whitney Dunn, who played at Alabama State last year, led the Bearkats with 19 points after going 8-for-16 from the field. Deborah Ogayemi had a near-double-double with 14 points and 9 rebounds for Sam Houston.
Liberty will face Louisiana Tech or New Mexico State in the semifinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Defending champion MTSU allowed just 8 first-half points to ride to a dominant win in its tournament opener.
The Blue Raiders outscored Kennesaw State 41-8 in the first two quarters on Wednesday to advance to the Conference USA tournament semifinals. Kennesaw State was also outrebounded 29-13 in the first half.
Anastasiia Boldyreva, the league’s defensive player of the year, dominated on offense with a 29-point performance for MTSU. She shot 12-for-19 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free throw line, also adding 7 rebounds.
Elina Arike and Ta’Mia Scott both scored 13 points each for MTSU as Scott also led the Blue Raiders with 8 rebounds and Arike adding 7.
Jalynn Gregory also scored in double figures with 11 points, knocking down three 3-point baskets in the win and grabbing 6 rebounds.
Ramsay High alum and Birmingham native Keiara Griffin led the Owls with 12 points, going 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Prencis Harden scored 10 points and was one of four players with 5 rebounds.
MTSU will face Western Kentucky or Florida International in the semifinals on Friday at 8 p.m.

No. 1 Liberty 81, No. 8 UTEP 60
Four players scored in double figures as Liberty rolled past UTEP to advance to the semifinal round.
Zach Cleveland paced the Flames with 19 points as he went 9-for-13 from the field in the win, while Taelon Peter had a perfect shooting night as he went 5-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from 3-point range for 14 points.
Kaden Metheny (16 points) and Jayvon Maughmer (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Flames in the win, with Maughmer adding a team-high 6 rebounds for Liberty.
UTEP’s Devon Barnes scored 18 points for the Miners, going 6-for-13 from the field and 5-for-9 from beyond the arc, while Corey Camper Jr. scored 13 points.
Liberty will face Kennesaw State or New Mexico State in the semifinals on Friday.

The Gamecocks held off a tough Florida International team as Jaron Pierre Jr. went off for 19 points and freshman Quel’Ron House totaled 18 for Jax State.
