Here is what Dilfer had to say in his weekly press conference:
— The first-year UAB coach says the team and coaching staff got better during the bye week, specifically with self-scouting and self-evaluation. Dilfer says there will be plenty of tweaks for the rest of the season. The self-evaluations were “positive” and there is a “renewed confidence” among those inside the program. The biggest issue according to Dilfer, is taking turns messing up. The goal is “getting everybody going in the same direction.”
— Jacob Zeno was a full participant in practice last week and is full-go for Saturday’s game against FAU. Dilfer says Zeno was awesome during his one-game absence and helped UAB’s quarterback room prepare for the game against Memphis two weeks ago.
— The Blazers have endured injuries to the offensive line and there are a few still banged up leaving the bye week, Trey Bedosky and Brennan Moran have missed the last three games, while Logan Moore and Tater Reid sat out the Memphis loss. Those still healing are questionable and they’re work in practice will determine availability this week.
— Dilfer was quite pleased to speak about FAU offensive coordinator Charlie Frye, a close friend and a former candidate for the same position at UAB when Dilfer was hired. Dilfer says Frye does a good job and is a “good teacher” in using a similar “get the dude the ball” mentality as himself.
— FAU’s offense is filled with transfers and the Blazers will use current film rather than dive into work at former programs. Dilfer says certain players fit certain schemes and older player film may not be as useful as some think.
— Dilfer says bye weeks are only scary when you’re winning. He related a story from his time at Lipscomb Academy (Tenn.) where his team lost four straight games following a “fall break” during Dilfer’s first season. He says the bye week is for “doing work.”
— The Blazers must win their final four games to reach bowl eligibility and Dilfer says there is no need to create a sense of urgency where one should already be present, He also says “everything we do is to create a sense of urgency.”
