Here is what Dilfer had to say in his weekly press conference:
— UAB is “coming off another disappointing loss” and Dilfer says the focus is to get better in all aspects from coaching to running the building. He says the Blazers have a huge challenge in facing Georgia, who has “allowed 24 points this year while we gave 24 points in one half.”
— Dilfer looks to the example set by SEC powers Georgia and Alabama, saying they have “great culture, good people doing the work and are NFL coached.” He says that Georgia’s best quality is its ability to finish in all aspects of the game.
— “Bad things will happen to the Blazers” against Georgia but Dilfer says the opportunity is there for UAB if it responds and plays well when faced with adversity.
— Dilfer did not bring up the Georgia game in team meetings on Sunday as the Blazers “have enough issues of our own.” He also said Georgia could make mistakes but they are not as catastrophic due to their immense talent and coaching.
— Dilfer, along with the entire coaching staff and team, were transparent in where they needed to improve and indulged in “matter-of-factness” with one another. He say UAB is a bad team right now but “that’s OK, they’re good people, but we have to meet the standard” and said that begins with himself. Dilfer said he spoke with his coaching mentor, current Fresno State head coach Jeff Tedford, and his former offensive coordinator and quarterback coach in college told him to “get his edge back.”
— There was plenty of reevaluation following UAB’s recent loss and there will be a “reconfiguration on how the coaching happens.” Dilfer said there are no firings or relegations on the coaching staff but there be personal moves that he is not at liberty to divulge at the moment. These will not be “dramatic changes but tactical” in nature.
