Rewinding Nick Saban’s press conference: ‘I like the spirit of this team’

Alabama spring football is nearing the halfway point. The Crimson Tide completed its 10th practice on Wednesday and got one step closer to A-Day on April 22.

But before that Alabama will have its second scrimmage this Saturday, April 15. That same day, the transfer portal will open for the spring window. Head coach Nick Saban will likely address both when he gets to the podium at approximately 6 p.m.

–Saban started his opening statement with three points of emphasis: a better effort to finish plays; a sustained intensity from play-to-play; a reduction of mental errors to prevent negative plays and penalties.

–”We’re constantly trying to teach guys cause and effect,” Saban said.

–”Half of our penalties have been pre- and post-snap,” Saban said as he cited false starts and similar infractions.

–”I like the spirit of the team,” Saban said. He’s looking for a “little bit better” execution for a “little more” consistency.

–Saban called former NFL coach Ken Whisenhunt a welcome addition to the staff. Former player Ha Ha Clinton Dix was hired in a “player development” role, giving guidance in a non-football capacity, Saban said.

–Saban said offensive linemen has improved from the end of last year. Pritchett is competing for a starting role.

–”Each time we do a scrimmage we’re trying to create a game-type environment for the players,” Saban said ahead of the team’s next scrimmage this Saturday. “…It doesn’t really change a lot (from week one to week two).”

–Saban broke down the team’s STAR position, which Saban likened to a strong-side linebacker. Saban also addressed what he looks for in an interior linebacker leading the defense, attributing credit to former player Henry To’oTo’o.

–Saban said up to five starting defenders have been out at a time this spring. This has allowed younger players to get reps and opportunities to develop.

–Saban doesn’t have an evaluation of which quarterback has grown the most through camp. He did say both have potential starters Jalen Milroe and Ty Simpson have made strides and have had moments in practice. Saban reiterated that limiting turnovers and mistakes at that position is paramount.
