Rewinding everything Hugh Freeze said as Auburn prepares to take on Oklahoma

Auburn is looking to bounce back once again after a disappointing 24-14 loss to Arkansas last Saturday.

Now, the Tigers turn their attention to Oklahoma, who is also coming off a loss in its Southeastern Conference opener. It will be another 2:30 p.m. kickoff in Jordan-Hare Stadium when the Tigers and Sooners clash on Saturday.

Follow along as Freeze previews the week ahead:

  • Freeze starts his press conference saying, “The most disappointing thing is when you have to sit before the great fans that you work for and administration that you work for and know you’ve lost two football games that were winnable games.”
  • Freeze said Champ Anthony’s surgery went well following his leg injury against Arkansas.
  • Freeze complimented Auburn’s defensive effort against Arkansas and said they played the ball downfield better.
  • “We can’t turn the football over and we’ve got to coach the quarterbacks better,” Freeze said.
  • Freeze said he thought the play calling was good and complimented the coaching staff’s plan on both sides of the ball.
  • Asked about the offensive identity, Freeze suggests that they should maybe call fewer shot plays and focus more on the RPOs.
  • Freeze said it’s “sickening” to know that they’re creating explosive plays but are unable to score the points that would usually come from those plays.
  • Freeze said, “it’s going to be a battle this week,” when asked about the quarterbacks.
  • Freeze: “We’re dang good when we’re in second-and-6. We’re not so good when we’re in second or third-and-10.”
  • When asked about the decision to bench Hank Brown at halftime, Freeze said, “I’d experienced that two weeks earlier. It wasn’t gonna continue down that road.”
  • “We’re thin for sure. [Antonio] Kite and JC [Hart] are gonna have to play a lot of snaps,” Freeze said when asked about how Anthony’s injury affects the secondary.
  • Freeze mentioned that quarterback Holden Geriner is a “quality player” who is still an option at quarterback, but the battle is still primarily between Thorne and Brown for the starting spot.
  • Freeze said he “loves being in the fire” with this staff. Mentioned that there will be an emphasis on cutting out turnovers and penalties, but that the staff isn’t going to change much.
  • Freeze said that he got to know Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables personally on a vacation when they both had young kids. Said he really liked him as a person and complimented his defenses as a coach.
  • Freeze said he thought the offensive line played well against Arkansas outside of two pressures. Said Saturday’s starting five is pretty set, but Ronan Chambers, Bradyn Joiner and Tate Johnson are still factors.
  • Freeze said outside of the Tennessee game, Oklahoma has only given up one explosive run all season.
