Rewinding as Nick Saban previews Alabama-Ole Miss on ‘Hey Coach’

Nick Saban received a cheer from the live crowd as he sat down on the set of “Hey Coach’ at Baumhower’s in Tuscaloosa.

Eli Gold and ESPN reporter Chris Low are co-hosting tonight’s show along with the Alabama head coach. The No. 13 Crimson Tide (2-1) take on No. 15 Ole Miss (3-0) this Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

— “What really good offensive coaches do is they understand defense,” and vice versa, Saban said when referencing Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin and his father, Monte Kiffin. That knowledge of defensive schemes provides an “advantage” for offensive-minded coaches. Saban said the “really good” coaches can adapt and pivot.

–The Tide defense is facing another “fastball” offense this week, Saban said. Players are more concerned about getting the play in and lining up properly and can tend to oversee a reciever or piece on offense. Ole Miss can also use fake snap counts, like quarterback Jaxson Dart clapping his hands before the offense looks over to the sidelines to get a new play now that the Ole Miss coaches have seen the defensive look.

–Gold made it clear that Peewee from Grandbay is “under the weather,” and wasn’t around for the first question of the night. Saban joked about Peewee’s “mental toughness” and wondered if the caller had the ability to “play hurt.”

–Saban described the importance of each player bringing focus and determination to each play.

”If there’s one thing I hate, is a player messes up and says, ‘My bad.’ We can’t have that man. … We can’t have re-dos. I used to give my kid re-dos.”

–Saban said the amount of Alabama alums in the NFL plays a “huge” part in recruiting. “We’re able to attract really good players.”

–”We got some practice on it last week,” Saban said about Alabama’s prep against fast-paced offense.

“When you have a scout team you’re telling them what pass to run or what they look from a different play. So when you play fast, they don’t get the plays past.”

The Tide tried to counter the solution by running “two different offenses” against the same defense to replicate the pace of play it faced against South Florida and will face again this weekend against Ole Miss.

–Saban reiterated that offensive guard Tyler Booker is expected to return and is the “leader” of the group. His availability should help left tackle Kadyn Proctor, who Saban said was paired with Booker on the left side of the Tide’s offensive line intentionally.

–Harrison from Florence took the place of Peewee and asked about Ole Miss’ defensive line presenting a challenge to the Tide. Saban said the defensive ends are athletic and “Pete’s (Golding) got them playing well.”

“We have to protect the quarterback better, there’s no doubt about that.”

–Saban said the transfer portal has created more “parity” and has taken depth from some of the elite teams in the country.

–Saban called the Tide’s new name, image and likeness Advantage Center a place where Tide players can boost its NIL value through creating podcasts or other content. It’ll be opening tonight in Bryant-Denny Stadium, so Saban will be leaving the show early.
