Rev. Dr. Bernice King to give keynote address at 2023 International Peace Conference
Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King is slated to give the keynote address at the 2023 International Peace Conference in Birmingham.
Set to take place from May 4 to May 6, the International Peace Conference is a partnership between the Rotary International District of North and Central Alabama, The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, and the Institute for Human Rights at the University of Alabama Birmingham.
The two-day immersive experience will bring together leaders in academia, government, public safety, religion, business, and community service to share ideas about social justice and civics through a series of lectures and break-out sessions.
“By addressing human trafficking, education, racial injustice, empowerment of women and girls, violence reduction, and other topics, the Conference will highlight the pursuit of peace at all levels of society,” organizers of the International Peace Conference said in a press release.
The youngest daughter of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, Dr. Bernice A. King is a strategist, orator, peace advocate, and CEO of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change (The King Center), the organization founded by her mother as the official living memorial to the life, work, and legacy of her father.
“As we commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Children’s March in Birmingham, I believe that we desperately need the reminder this anniversary provides of the combined power of love, nonviolent strategy, and consistency to purpose,” said Dr. King in the same release. “Courageous, committed children were willing to be inconvenienced to overcome injustice. That same courage and commitment are needed today, and this commemoration is a call up to both. I am hopeful that we all, from the Nation’s Capitol to city halls, from homes to houses of worship, and from chambers of commerce to corporations, will answer the call.”

The International Peace Conference is one of a series of events in Birmingham designed to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the civil rights movement.
The year of tribute is a collaboration with area churches, arts organizations, activists, businesses and nonprofits. The theme for the year is “Forging Justice,” a nod to Birmingham’s industrial beginnings. In addition to the International Peace Conference, commemorative programs this year include the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing memorial, the Children’s March reenactment, concerts, exhibits, a healing conference, and tributes to Dr. King and the Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth.
