Reports: Notre Dame transfer QB Tyler Buchner to visit Alabama

Hours after Tyler Buchner announced he’d be entering the transfer portal, the junior quarterback has reportedly set a visit to Alabama.

According to multiple reports, Buchner’s first stop as he evaluates potential schools will be with the Crimson Tide.

Buchner was offered by Alabama when he was a four-star prospect in the class of 2021 and has ties to current offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who recruited Buchner to South Bend, Indiana. John Brice of footballscoop.com tweeted Buchner may be in Tuscaloosa “as soon as (Tuesday) night.”

Across three starts in 2022, Buchner generated 651 passing yards and 123 rushing yards with seven total touchdowns to five interceptions. He started Notre Dame’s opening pair of games before an AC joint sprain helped him out of action for four months. Buchner returned to win the 2021 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, throwing his third touchdown that day and fifth overall, with a game-winning score in the fourth quarter.

Like the other contenders for Alabama’s starting quarterback position, Bucher is a mobile thrower. During last Saturday’s A-Day scrimmage, current Tide quarterbacks Ty Simpson and Jalen Milroe appeared most productive when on the move. Neither has separated themselves in the spring leaving the potential for a transfer.

Buchner is reportedly in the portal with a “do not contact” tag as well, which means schools aren’t allowed to begin a conversation with him. Players in the past have used that designation when they already have a list of schools to consider.
