Reports: Michigan fires alleged sign-stealer Connor Stalions

Michigan has fired Connor Stalions, the football staff member at the center of the ongoing sign stealing scandal, according to multiple reports.

Stalions had been suspended with pay from his job as a football analyst while the school looked into allegations that he helped organize a complex multi-state operation to record future Wolverines opponents’ on-field signals, which is against NCAA rules. The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach and ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg are both reporting that Stalions refused to cooperate with Michigan’s internal investigation.

Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has denied knowledge of the sign-stealing operation, which reportedly involved Stalions purchasing tickets or securing sideline access for himself or his representatives at numerous games involving the Wolverines’ Big Ten or potential postseason opponents. Stalions reportedly purchased tickets for the Ohio State-Penn State game on Oct. 21, but the tickets went unused after news of the scandal broke.

Most egregiously, Stalions was apparently on the Central Michigan sideline in CMU staff gear for a game this season against Michigan State, Michigan’s in-state and Big Ten arch-rival. Central Michigan is investigating whether or not the man on the sideline was Stalions, but so far has not denied it was him.

Big Ten football coaches and athletics directors have reportedly held separate meetings this week with conference commissioner Tony Petitti, who is under pressure to issue some sort of discipline to Michigan. The Wolverines are 8-0 and ranked No. 3 in the College Football Playoff Top 25 headed into Saturday’s home game with Purdue.
