Reports: Jimbo Fisher could be out soon at Texas A&M

Jimbo Fisher’s future at Texas A&M appears to be hanging in the balance.

According to reports Sunday morning by ESPN and Yahoo Sports, the school’s Board of Regents held an hours-long meeting Thursday to discuss the coach’s future and is scheduled to meet again today. TexAgs.com is reporting that Fisher could be fired as soon as today.

Fisher is in his sixth year at Texas A&M, where he signed a then-record 10 year, $75 million contract after leaving Florida State at the end of the 2017 season. The Aggies are 45-25 in that time, but just 27-21 in the SEC and have never won the SEC West.

Texas A&M is 6-4 this season after a 51-10 victory over Mississippi State on Saturday. The Aggies finish the regular season with a non-conference game against Abilene Christian next Saturday, then travel to LSU on Nov. 25.

If fired without cause (i.e., not winning enough), Fisher would be owed the full balance of his contract, which runs through 2031 after an extension signed two years ago. His buyout would be more than $75 million.

The 58-year-old Fisher — a former Samford quarterback — was offensive coordinator at Auburn under Terry Bowden from 1993-98 and worked in the same position under Nick Saban and Les Miles at LSU from 2000-06. He got his first head-coaching job in 2010 at Florida State, where he went 83-23 in eight seasons and won the 2013 BCS national championship.
