Reports: Houston fires football coach Dana Holgorsen
Houston has fired football coach Dana Holgorsen after five seasons, according to multiple reports.
Holgorsen went 31-28 at Houston, including 4-8 this season. The Cougars were a power in the American Athletic Conference, but struggled when moving to the Big 12 this season.
The 52-year-old Holgorsen surprised many when he left West Virginia for Houston in 2019, which at the time was a move from a Power 5 school to one in the Group of 5. In 13 seasons total as a college head coach, Holgorsen is 92-69 with nine bowl appearances.
According to Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, Houston will owe Holgorsen a buyout of nearly $15 million.
Holgorsen’s firing means there are now six Power 5 coaching openings, with Houston joining Texas A&M, Mississippi State, Syracuse, Indiana and Oregon State (Northwestern and Michigan State are already filled). Boise State, San Diego State and New Mexico are also open in the Group of 5.
