Reports: Former Arkansas, NFL QB Ryan Mallett dead at 35

Former Arkansas and NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett has died after drowning in Florida, according to multiple reports. He was 35.

Mallett, who finished seventh in the 2010 Heisman Trophy voting, was hired in 2022 as head coach at White Hall (Ark.) High School. DeltaPlexNews.com was first to report his death, which reportedly took place in the Destin area and was later confirmed by Arkansas television station KNWA Fox 24.

A five-star recruit at Texarkana (Ark.) High School, the 6-foot-7 Mallett originally signed with Michigan but left the Wolverines after one season to return to his home-state school. He thrived in Bobby Petrino’s offensive scheme with the Razorbacks, passing for 7,493 yards and 69 touchdowns in two seasons.

After leading Arkansas to a 10-3 record and a berth in the Sugar Bowl, Mallett declared for the 2011 NFL draft. He was a third-round pick of the New England Patriots and was traded to the Houston Texans in 2014 after three seasons backing up Tom Brady.

In Houston, he started six games in two years before being released. He started two games for the Baltimore Ravens late in the 2015 and spent two more years as a backup.

Mallett went into coaching as an assistant at Mountain Home (Ark.) High School in 2020. He went 4-6 in his first season as head coach at White Hall in 2022.
