Reports: Colorado set to leave Pac-12 for Big 12 in ’24
The University of Colorado Board of Regents is scheduled to meet Thursday, after which the school is expected to announce a move from the Pac-12 to the Big 12 beginning with the 2024 football season.
The Buffaloes played in the Big 12 from 1996-2011, when they departed for the Pac-12. Colorado would be the third school in the last two years to leave the Pac-12, after USC and UCLA jumped to the Big Ten this year.
Action Network’s Brett McMurphy and Yahoo Sports’ Ross Dellenger are among those reporting the move. The official agenda for Thursday’s Colorado Board of Regents meeting, set for 3 p.m. Mountain Daylight Time, contains only one item: “Athletic Operations,” per Richard Johnson of Sports Illustrated.
Colorado was once a power in the Big 12 and Big 8 (the predecessor to the Big 12), but has been among the worst Power 5 programs in the country since moving to the Pac-12. The Buffaloes went 1-11 last season, and hired Deion Sanders as head coach in the offseason.
The Big 12 is losing Texas and Oklahoma to the SEC in 2024, but added Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston and BYU to become a 14-team league this year. Adding Colorado would make for a 13-team Big 12 next season, meaning the conference is likely to add at least one more member before then.
