Reports: Big 12 planning on playing games in Mexico

The Big 12 is finalizing plans to play future football and basketball games in Mexico City, commissioner Brett Yormark said Wednesday.

Yormark confirmed the news with Brandon Marcello of 247 Sports, saying an official announcement could come in the next two weeks. Of Mexico City, Yormark said, “It’s a critically important market. It’s becoming an event capital.”

Mexico City has hosted several NFL games in the past, and last week hosted a two-game Major League Baseball Series between the San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants. But Mexico has yet to get involved in hosting American college sports, as countries such as Ireland and Australia have done in recent years.

The Athletic and the Houston Chronicle both reported Tuesday that that is about to change, perhaps as soon as 2024. The agreement could last multiple years, with schools such as Kansas and Houston potentially involved.
