Reports: Aaron Rodgers has torn Achilles, MRI confirms
Aaron Rodgers has a torn Achilles tendon in his left leg and is expected to miss the remainder of the season, according to multiple reports Tuesday.
The New York Jets quarterback was injured on just his fourth play with his new team, which rallied to beat the Buffalo Bills 22-16 in overtime on Monday night. Jets coach Robert Saleh said after the game that doctors feared Rodgers had damaged his Achilles, and MRIs results reportedly confirmed the news Tuesday.
The Jets have not confirmed the injury or that Rodgers is out for the season, though head coach Robert Saleh is expected to speak with reporters later Tuesday. The team did release a get-well message to Rodgers via X (formerly Twitter):
The 39-year-old Rodgers was traded to the Jets in the offseason from Green Bay, with which he had spent his entire 18-year NFL career. He won four league MVP awards and a Super Bowl with the Packers.
Rodgers was injured when he was trying to escape the Bills’ Leonard Floyd, with his left foot catching in the turf at MetLife Stadium. He strained the same calf during offseason workouts with the Jets.
Rodgers signed a two-year, $75 million guaranteed contract after being traded to the Jets, but it’s not yet known if he will attempt to return from the injury. Rehab from an Achilles injury is especially grueling, particularly for an athlete of Rodgers’ age.
Zach Wilson, a former first-round draft pick who had fallen out of favor in New York, replaced Rodgers in the lineup. He completed 14 of 21 passes for 140 yards and a touchdown with an interception.
