Report: Mississippi coast man to spend 25 years in prison for assault on 3-year-old

A Mississippi coast man who assaulted and severely injured a 3-year-old will spend the next 25 years in prison, a judge ruled this week.

According to the Sun Herald, 34-year-old Brandon Battersby pleaded guilty to aggravated assault and felony child neglect for the July 2020 assault for which the child had to be airlifted to University of South Alabama’s Women & Children’s Hospital.

“There’s a special place for you in the afterlife,” Judge Lisa Dodson told Battersby before sentencing Battersby to the maximum term allowed under Mississippi law. “What you have done to this child is unforgivable.”

Harrison County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a medical emergency at a Long Beach, Miss., campground on in July 2020. Battersby and the child’s mother initially told investigators the child had been injured falling off a table, the report said.

But a medical expert found that “the injuries were the result of non-accidental trauma to the head,” according to the Harrison County District Attorney’s Office.

Battersby admitted to having been drinking for more than a day prior to the incident, in which he shook the child so violently it caused severe injuries.

The mother, unidentified in the report, has already pleaded guilty to felony child neglect and hindering prosecution. She is set to be sentenced next week.
