Report: Big Ten looking to add 4 more Pac-12 schools

The Big Ten has begun “preliminary talks” to add Oregon, Washington, Cal and Stanford from the Pac-12, according to a report Wednesday by Yahoo Sports’ Dan Wetzel.

Wetzel’s report stressed that discussions among Big Ten university presidents regarding expansion were “in the very early stages.” The league might choose not to expand again in the near future, according to the report.

The Big Ten has already stolen away UCLA and USC from the Pac-12. Those two schools officially join the Big Ten beginning with the 2024 football season.

Adding UCLA and USC will take the Big Ten to 16 members, but the league could expand further to 18 or 20. Oregon and Washington would be the Big Ten’s first choices, with Cal and Stanford in the next tier, according to Wetzel’s report.

In addition to the defection of UCLA and USC from the Pac-12, Colorado is also leaving for the Big 12 next season. The Pac-12 attempted to add San Diego State earlier this summer, but the exit fee required to leave the Mountain West was considered too high for the Aztecs to switch conferences.

At issue is the Pac-12′s media rights contract, which on Tuesday was revealed to lean largely on the Apple TV+ streaming service and would pay each school an estimated $20 million per year. The Big Ten’s new broadcast deal with CBS, Fox, NBC and Peacock — which begins this year — will pay league members around $50 million per year.

UPDATE: The Big Ten released a brief statement in response to the report, which they didn’t exactly deny.
