Rep. Terri Sewell appointed to House Armed Services Committee
Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery perhaps scored a win Tuesday with the appointment of U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell to the House Armed Services Committee.
Sewell, the state’s lone elected Democrat in Washington, noted that the Air Force base is in her district and her position on Armed Services will give the base a stronger voice. The base has more than 12,500 active duty, reserve, civilian and contractor personnel.

“The state of Alabama has long played a central role in advancing U.S. defense capabilities, and as a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I am excited to do my part to support the brave men and women working to keep our nation safe and secure,” Sewell said in the announcement. “We in Alabama’s 7th Congressional District are proud to be home to Maxwell Air Force Base, the 187th Fighter Wing, the 117th Air Refueling Wing, and countless men and women in uniform that profoundly serve our country. I look forward to leveraging my position on the Armed Services Committee to advocate for their needs in this new Congress.”
Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers, a Republican from Saks, is the chair of Armed Services. Freshman Congressman Dale Strong, whose north Alabama district includes Redstone Arsenal, has also been appointed to Armed Services.
The committee is responsible for funding and oversight of the U.S. Department of Defense.
Sewell has also been appointed to the House Administration Committee, which is responsible for overseeing federal elections and day-to-day operations in the House, as well as continuing her work on the Ways and Means Committee. Sewell has served on Ways and Means, the House’s oldest committee and the chamber’s chief tax-writing committee, since 2017.
