Regular-season finale Huntsville area Player of the Week dominates the voting
The final week of the Alabama High School Athletic Association football regular season produced several standout performances from the Huntsville/Tennessee Valley region and the Week 11 Huntsville Times Player of the Week ran away from the competition.
Madison Academy’s Josh Williams picked up 72 percent – 12,666 – of the 17,647 total votes in the poll. The senior running back gained 168 yards on 26 carries and scored twice as the Mustangs beat Westminster Christian 21-17 in a key Class 4A, Region 8. The victory was Madison Academy’s fourth straight to give the Mustangs a 6-4 finish, 6-2 in the region and the No. 3 seed. Coach Bob Godsey’s squad will play at Hokes Bluff on Friday to open the state playoffs.
Williams is the first student-athlete from Madison Academy to finish atop the Player of the Week poll this season.
Brannon Oliver of Fort Payne finished second in the poll with 13 percent of the total – 2,368 votes. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound senior wideout caught 9 passes for 165 yards and 2 touchdowns as the Wildcats capped an 8-2 regular season with a 38-10 rout at Pelham. Fort Payne finished as the top seed in Class 6A, Region 8 with a 6-0 mark. Pell City will visit on Friday to open the playoffs.
Randolph quarterback William Mitchell was third in the balloting with 1,557 votes. The 6-1, 170-pound senior completed 14-of-19 passes for 265 yards and 3 TDs in a 48-7 home win over Class 4A, Region 8 foe New Hope. The Raiders finished second in the region with a 7-1 record, 8-2 overall. Randolph will host Anniston on Friday in the first round.
