Redstone Arsenal traffic expected to slow, Army checking all gate badges for 2 weeks

Beginning Friday, Redstone Arsenal gate guards will scan the access cards of all commuters entering the gates for the next two weeks. That means 100 percent screening of up to 40,000 people who work on or for the base and its military, NASA, FBI and other government tenants.

The checks are part of an “Armywide 100% ID check,” scheduled from April 28 through May 12, the base said. Required checks will be repeated June 1-14 and the Army will compare the results to better understand its gate staffing needs.

“Redstone will be joining every post, camp and station across the Army in this data collection effort,” said U.S. Army Garrison-Redstone Arsenal Commander Col. Brian Cozine.

Cozine urged tenants and employees “not to shift to a max telework posture” to avoid traffic slowdowns. “This study has the potential to demonstrate we need more gate guards, which would allow us to open more lanes,” Cozine said. “We are asking the workforce to be patient with us while we collect this data for the Army.”

The data sought includes volume per hour, per lane of automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, buses, bicycles and pedestrians entering the installation, the Army said. “The IDs that are normally scanned and allow our commuters entrance are valid and acceptable,” Cozine said.

Acceptable IDs include: Common Access Card, driver’s license or ID registered in the Automated Installation Entry System, Department of Defense Teslin card, Automated Installation Entry System-generated access badge and Automated Installation Entry System-generated paper pass.
