A red flag warning will be in effect for Saturday for roughly the northern half of Alabama.

A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions will be possible, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service is expecting low dewpoints and breezy conditions in Alabama today. Those things, combined with worsening drought conditions, could make it easy for wildfires to start and spread.

“This means be very cautious; avoid open flames outdoors and properly dispose of cigarettes and matches,” the weather service said.

NORTH ALABAMA

A red flag warning will be in effect from noon until 7 p.m. Saturday for Lauderdale, Colbert, Franklin, Lawrence, Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Marshall, Jackson, DeKalb and Cullman counties.

The weather service in Huntsville is expecting humidity levels to be as low as 24 percent, and winds could be 10-15 mph with gusts as high as 25 mph.

CENTRAL ALABAMA

A red flag warning will be in effect from noon until 7 p.m. Saturday for Winston, Marion, Lamar, Fayette, Walker, Blount, Etowah, Calhoun, Cherokee, Cleburne, Jefferson, Shelby, St. Clair and Talladega counties.

The weather service in Birmingham is expecting humidity levels to be as low as 22 percent, and winds could be 10-15 mph with gusts as high as 25 mph.
