Recruiting update: Charles Henderson 3-star receiver commits to Troy, more news

Charles Henderson receiver Jywon Boyd announced his commitment to Troy on Friday.

The 3-star senior chose the Trojans over UAB, Memphis, Tulane and Liberty.

Boyd earned Class 5A first team all-state last season after helping the Trojans to the championship game before falling to Ramsay.

The 5-foot-11, 189-pound Boyd had 55 catches for 1,009 yards and 16 touchdowns as a junior, adding 263 yards rushing with a score. Boyd accounted for 1,905 all-purpose yards and 21 touchdowns. He also contributed 47 tackles and five interceptions on defense.

A pair of Pelham players also recently committed.

Senior Bishop Rella will play for Navy while teammate Will Felton committed to South Alabama.

UPCOMING COMMITMENTS

Clay-Chalkville 4-star Jac’Qawn McRoy will commit on Saturday while two more state players will pledge over the weekend.

Valley’s Cam Dooley will commit on Saturday at 4 p.m. while Davidson senior Derrick Butler will announce his decision on Sunday.

Dooley is a 6-4, 195-pound 3-star ATH with offers from Arkansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Vanderbilt, UAB, Jacksonville State, Tulane and more.

A 3-star 6-foot, 185-pound running back, Butler has offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, West Virginia, Central Florida, Tulane, East Carolina, Southern Miss, UAB, Troy, Jacksonville State and more.

Jamari Payne of Loachapoka recently announced his top 7 and plans to commit on July 7 at 4 p.m. The 3-star 6-3, 250-pound senior defensive lineman will choose among Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Missouri, Purdue, Memphis, Western Kentucky and Alabama State.

OFFERS

Central-Phenix City is loaded on both sides of the ball, including junior offensive lineman Mal Waldrep who recently announced a Georgia offer. The 6-5, 290-pound 3-star recruit also has offers from Auburn, Kentucky, Clemson, Florida State, Penn State, UAB and more.

Hewitt-Trussville’s Ethan Ridley announced his first offer from UAB. The 6-1, 160-pound defensive back is a sophomore.

BASKETBALL RECRUITING

Class of 2027 girls basketball player Jayla Forbes of Thompson announced an offer from Mississippi State. The 6-7 post player also has an offer from San Jose State.

Forbes averaged 6.4 points and 9.4 rebounds a game for the Warriors last season as an eighth-grader.
