Record highs today in Alabama; more possible Thursday

It was warm enough on Wednesday to break or tie several high temperature records in Alabama.

One city, Birmingham, broke a record that has stood for more than 125 years. Mobile also broke its record high. Three other cities tied the record high for Feb. 22.

Here are Wednesday’s records:

* Anniston: 82 degrees, tying the record last set in 2018.

* Birmingham: 82 degrees, breaking the record of 81 degrees from 1897.

* Mobile: 82 degrees, breaking the record of 81 degrees from 2022 and 2018.

* Tuscaloosa: 83 degrees, tying the record last reached in 2018.

More record-setting warmth will be possible on Thursday, according to forecasters. Some areas may have cloudy skies that keep temperatures a little lower, but others that see sunshine may have another shot at the record books. (Thursday’s forecast highs are at the top of this post.)

Cooler temperatures for part of Alabama are expected behind a cold front that could stall out over the state.

Some areas in Alabama will be a bit cooler on Friday, but it will stay warm across the south.

More warm temperatures are in the forecast for next week as well. In fact, above-average temperatures are highly favored for Alabama through March 4, according to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center:
