Recent shootings plaguing Mobile ‘will not be tolerated,’ interim police chief says

A recent spate of shootings — two of them deadly — led Mobile’s interim police chief on Tuesday to say gunfire and other violence “will not be tolerated” in the city.

“Over the past several days our officers have responded to several incidents involving gun violence in Mobile. Three shootings have occurred at apartment complexes, while a fourth shooting took place outside of a convenience store,” said Interim Police Chief William Jackson in a statement.

“While several incidents were domestic-related, any violence that occurs in our city will not be tolerated,” Jackson said. “If found taking part in any of these senseless acts, those involved will be held accountable for their actions.”

Jackson said his department concluded its investigation into the homicide Saturday at the Stone Ridge Apartments and the case is headed to a grand jury to determine whether the shooter acted in self-defense or if murder charges are warranted.

In that incident, 25-year-old Jermaine Thomas was found shot to death inside an apartment unit at the complex at 1200 Somerby Dr. around 10:58 a.m. Saturday, police said.

Officers learned Thomas forced his way into the apartment to confront someone when a second person inside the unit fatally shot him.

“We’re lucky no one else was seriously hurt in this incident,” Jackson said.

In an incident police believe is domestically-related, a female was found shot to death Monday night in an apartment at the Summit at Hillcrest at 1601 Hillcrest Rd.

No arrests have been made in that case.

“These should be places where families feel comfortable, knowing they’re safe where they live,” Jackson said Tuesday. “Instead, disagreements between individuals take that sense of security away when men, women and children hear gunfire. Innocent individuals can easily get caught in the crossfire, with stray bullets causing property damage, serious injuries, or worse in these populated places.”

He implored Mobilians to settle arguments “in a peaceful way.

“We take these crimes seriously, and I assure you the men and women of the Mobile Police Department will continue to work diligently as we combat these matters,” he said.
